Photograph of the panel for the Black Student Center's 2017 Kwanzaa celebration. Panelists were, from left to right: Dr. Mohamed Abumaye, CSUSM professor of sociology; Tiamoyo Karenga; Dr. Maulana Karenga; Cyntia Rice, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, MiraCosta College; and Dr. Geoffrey Gilmore, Associate Vice President of Student Academic Support Services at California State University San Marcos. Dr. Karenga was co-founder of the Black liberation group US Organization, and was the creator of the Kwanzaa holiday, in 1966. Karenga chairs the Africana Studies Department at California State University, Long Beach. Tiamoyo Karenga is the coordinator and a lecturer at the Kawaida Institue of Pan-African Studies and member of the Board of Directors of the African American Cultural Center (US).
